Wolff: We are studying how Gasly's situation affects Russell.
The Mercedes management has already contacted their lawyers, instructing them to find out if there are any grounds for filing a protest regarding the penalties issued to George Russell in Monaco, which caused him to lose points despite being in the top three seven laps before the finish. However, the British Mercedes driver's hopes for a good result collapsed when he was given a penalty for a pit lane drive-through. Both he and the factory team of the Stuttgart concern were, of course, upset, but they were not planning to take any action until the FIA's decision to overturn Pierre Gasly's penalty, which allowed the Alpine driver to return to 3rd place.
The fact is that, as it turned out, the speed measurement systems in the pit lane were indeed not functioning accurately, which was the reason for the numerous penalties – and Alpine managed to prove this. At the same time, the FIA's decision, announced on Friday, specifically emphasizes that "there is no provision in the rules that gives the stewards the right to overturn a penalty that has already been served." And this is exactly what happened with Russell. However, it is not only about this, but also about the fact that within the established regulatory timeframe, no other team besides Alpine attempted to contest the stewards' decisions or exercised their right to review them.
Nevertheless, at a press conference in Barcelona, Toto Wolff stated that regardless of this, the Mercedes team, along with their lawyers, is analyzing the situation, as today's FIA decision seriously affects the competitive landscape in the championship. "We are already looking into how Gasly's situation affects George," Wolff said. "Of course, there are certain time constraints. We certainly will not protest Gasly's results, but we want the FIA to check if there are any ways to rectify George's race results.
I believe there are time limits and other legal frameworks, but all of this certainly gives us cause for frustration. And I would like this discussion to take place before the Sunday race. We have already contacted our lawyers and instructed them to find out if anything can be done for George.
If he had not received a pit lane drive-through penalty during the race, he would not have lost 20 seconds. What could those 20 seconds have meant in terms of the result? Are we really counting on a revision of the race results? I don't think so.
But we definitely need to pursue this matter to find out if there is at least a minimal chance for our driver to return to 4th position. And we calculated that he could have finished in 3rd or 4th place." McLaren and Red Bull also announced their intentions to contest the stewards' decision to restore Gasly's 3rd place – they have 96 hours for this.
