While there were immediately seven replacements in the first practice, only the main drivers were working in the second – and the program turned out to be quite intense. Teams tested new items, drivers compensated for lost time in the morning – everyone was working hard. The asphalt temperature reached 50 degrees – it was tough for the tires and drivers.
At the beginning of the session, almost everyone went out on Medium, except for Verstappen, who used Hard and set the best time in the first 15 minutes – 1:16.452, and then the competitors picked up the pace.
At the 15th minute, Liam Lawson stopped on the track – the power unit simply shut down. Then Bottas had problems with the engine control unit.
Later, everyone switched to Soft – and the speeds increased – Piastri set the best lap on Medium at 1:15.724, then Russell and Norris ramped up the pace to 1:15.426.
In the end, Lawson was able to go out – in the last minute, the mechanics managed to solve the problem.
All drivers complained about significant tire wear – the compounds this year were a step softer – and wore out faster on the abrasive asphalt. Norris had the best time.

In the first practice in Barcelona, reserve drivers took the wheel in seven teams. Teams were fulfilling the mandatory requirement to have drivers who have participated in no more than two Grands Prix take the wheel in four practice sessions during the season. Previously, this was an opportunity for poorer teams to earn, now it is simply a duty – almost everyone had those who usually work on the simulator behind the wheel.
In Mercedes, the leader of the personal standings Kimi Antonelli gave his car to Frederic Vesti. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was replaced by Dino Beganovic in the Ferrari. In McLaren, Leonardo Fornaroli will conduct the practice instead of reigning world champion Lando Norris.
Ayumu Iwasa will be replaced by Isaac Hadjar at Red Bull Racing. In Williams, Luke Browning will take the wheel of Alex Albon's car. Nico Hulkenberg gave up his seat in the Audi cockpit to Paul Aron, and Colton Herta made his debut in Cadillac, replacing Sergio Perez.
Albon's car, which was supposed to be driven by Luke Browning, had an electrical problem – he never went out.
Bortoleto ended up in the gravel trap after going off in the sixth corner, Gasly complained about suspension issues, but overall the session went smoothly – everyone knows Barcelona well and feels calm.
The best time was set by George Russell, completing a lap in 1:16.363, but in the second practice, more experienced drivers will take the wheel and the results will become more representative.
