"Camara is also interested in spending a few years gaining experience."

Esteban Ocon’s future in Formula 1 may be increasingly under threat from Ferrari junior Rafael Camara. Although many in the paddock have speculated about Toyota-backed Jack Doohan potentially taking a Haas seat in 2027, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport suggests that Ferrari has different plans. According to reporter Tobias Gruner, Ferrari is already exploring ways to place the highly-rated Brazilian academy driver on the Formula 1 grid. "Many experts currently view Rafael Camara as the top talent in the junior racing series," Gruner stated. The 21-year-old secured last year’s Formula 3 title and has quickly made an impression since moving up to Formula 2. "In Maranello, they seemingly believe that the young driver from their junior program is ready to take the next step to Formula 1," Gruner added. With Charles Leclerc recently signing a new deal and Lewis Hamilton indicating he has no plans to retire, Ferrari’s race seats are currently filled. This naturally directs attention to Haas, Ferrari’s long-time technical partner, which is already supporting the promising Ferrari junior Oliver Bearman. "Camara is also keen to spend a few years learning the trade at Haas," Gruner reported. The challenge lies with Ocon. The French driver was brought in to provide experience and leadership for Haas, but his position appears to be more precarious now. "Team principal Ayao Komatsu did voice some mild criticism of the Frenchman during the winter break," Gruner noted. "They were not satisfied with his performance last year." The report indicates that Ocon's difficulties have persisted into 2026, although some of it can be attributed to bad luck. "This season, Ocon hasn’t done much to validate his continued presence," Gruner mentioned. "He managed to score a mere 3 points across the first six race weekends." Finances may also play a role. "Ocon is regarded as the highest-paid driver the North Carolina-based team has ever had," Gruner stated. "A rookie like Camara would undoubtedly be much more cost-effective."
