Pickup trucks are getting larger, with many unable to fit in today's modern garages. This is particularly true for electric trucks. Although the Rivian R1T is smaller than most full-size gas and electric trucks, it is still sizable.

During an exclusive one-on-one interview on The Drivecast in Park City, Utah, Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe quickly responded to my question about whether he sees a potential market for a smaller electric pickup than the R1. “Yeah,” he affirmed strongly.

You can listen to the full conversation starting from the moment Scaringe acknowledges the market potential for a compact electric truck below.

“Oh, I think there’s a, I mean, you’ve heard me talk about this before. I believe there are many different segments in the electrified product space that haven’t been fully explored yet. The first one that hasn’t really been addressed is the genuine midsize SUV; there isn’t a great midsize SUV available for consumers right now. There are midsize crossovers, but not true SUVs. I believe there's significant potential in the smaller truck segment and also in adventure-oriented crossovers. Hence the development of R3. There’s also R4. We must acknowledge that the platform can support other models beyond R2 and R3, which requires trade-offs regarding what we prioritize next,” Scaringe explained.

Earlier in the discussion, Scaringe mentioned, “We’ve considered R2Ts and additional concepts beyond that. I would say the platform has a lot of capabilities. The main challenge is determining what to pursue. There are numerous exciting possibilities we could explore. Therefore, our company needs to focus on which new product or set of products will deliver the greatest value and excitement, which is how we came to the portfolio we’ve publicly discussed, such as R2 and R3. I think the R3X was a great example; it was designed to signal the types of projects that could emerge, suggesting that unique variants could evolve from the R2 or R3 platforms. There are many avenues to consider. So, over time, I wouldn’t dismiss any options. However, in the short term, I wouldn’t expect to see any radically different variants; it will remain R2.”

It remains unclear whether R4 will take on a pickup form or be something entirely different. Scaringe would only disclose, “it’s very cool, but I’m not ready to discuss it yet.” When asked if it might be a pickup, Scaringe simply replied, “It could be many things.”

For now, the possibilities are endless. However, Scaringe did not categorically say that a small electric pickup truck would never be on the horizon.
