Earlier this week, General Motors unveiled the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado. This updated half-ton pickup features bolder styling and next-gen small-block V8 engines, though whether these changes represent a true upgrade may vary by individual perspective. For instance, I find it perplexing that the most off-road capable Silverado—the rugged ZR2—comes equipped with three screens.

To begin with, every 2027 Silverado model (including the Work Truck) is equipped with a 16.3-inch center display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Both the ZR2 and High Country variants also include an 11.5-inch front-passenger screen. When you factor in the heads-up display and a digital rearview camera, the total screen area reaches 60 inches. But is this level of technology necessary for a rugged truck like the Silverado ZR2?

Admittedly, front-passenger screens are currently on trend, available in a wide range of vehicles from the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the Lamborghini Revuelto, despite their questionable practicality. Given that many new vehicles feature large central touchscreens and digital instrument clusters providing ample information for the driver—regardless of the main screen's function—having a dedicated passenger screen seems somewhat excessive, particularly in the Silverado ZR2.

The truck market thrives on competition, so it makes sense that GM equipped the Silverado High Country with a passenger screen to compete with Stellantis, which offers one in higher-end Ram 1500 trims. Additionally, the 16.3-inch center display surpasses the Ram's 14.5-inch screen. However, as of this writing, there has been no indication of a passenger screen for the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT. The third screen was also absent on the RHO for 2026 (although it was available on the Rebel), and it seems likely to be the case for 2027 as well. The Ford F-150 Raptor does without a passenger screen, utilizing a more reasonably sized 12-inch center display.

Nonetheless, the ZR2 presents itself as a formidable off-roader. It features Multimatic DSSV dampers, 35-inch tires, and both front and rear lockers. The interior boasts real carbon fiber trim— a first for a Chevy truck—alongside attractive Torch Red accents, creating a sharp contrast to the more basic GM truck interiors of the past. The Silverado ZR2 Bison Edition will also return for 2027, offering enhanced bumpers, rocker rails, and skid plates from AEV.

There's a lot to look forward to across the entire 2027 Silverado lineup, including new V8 engines with familiar displacements and the long-awaited availability of the Duramax diesel inline-six for the basic Work Truck. These are the key areas a truck manufacturer should concentrate on, rather than simply adding more screens.
