Vowles is not worried that Sainz and Albon might leave.
James Vowles emphasizes that the continuation of cooperation with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon is an important factor influencing the further progress of Williams. However, the team principal from Grove is not afraid of an alternative scenario in which the drivers, whose contracts expire in 2026, decide to part ways with Williams.
Vowles honestly admits that so far the results do not meet the expectations of the team and its drivers, as a number of mistakes were made during the winter offseason in the process of creating the FW48 chassis. However, gradually there are reasons for optimism; in Miami, Montreal, and Monaco, the car already allowed for fighting for points, and in all three cases, the drivers managed to finish in the top ten.
At the same time, the team is working at an accelerated pace on technical innovations that will be implemented at almost all remaining summer stages of the season, and something will be presented in September as well.
Rumors about personnel changes that may occur in 2027 are already circulating in the paddock, but Vowles assured that he has no particular concerns about this.
“Carlos and Alex share the same values as I do – that is the best quality of our drivers,” Vowles stated. “It’s about honesty and openness. If they were considering an alternative scenario, they would come to me to discuss it.
In our relationship, everything is based on sincerity. I tell them all the news – both bad and good. They would be foolish if suddenly a vacancy appeared at Mercedes and they didn’t consider that option. But today they are 100 percent loyal to Williams.
Alex and Carlos have already spent a lot of time and effort to make Williams a team they want to race for. This is their team, and they won’t find anything like it anywhere else in Formula 1.
So I’m not worried. My job is to demonstrate that we can quickly solve all problems and create conditions under which the drivers can once again fight for podiums. And I intend to continue doing everything to make them true team leaders.”
