Briatore forecasts a calm F1 market, with the exception of Verstappen.
"Regrettably, Fernando lacks a competitive car."
Flavio Briatore believes that the Formula 1 driver market may not be as tumultuous as many perceive. With rumors surrounding Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Sergio Perez, and various other seats, the Alpine executive thinks there is only one significant change that is realistically possible. "I think in the end, nothing will happen," Briatore stated to Italy’s Auto Moto. "The only potential shift could be Verstappen moving to Mercedes." This comment comes amid increasing speculation about Verstappen's future at Red Bull, with Alpine positioning itself as a significant player in the 2027 discussions. Recently, there were reports suggesting Alonso might make a surprising return to Enstone and reunite with Briatore, although Aston Martin quickly rejected those claims. Briatore, who is still associated with Alonso's management, expressed his admiration for the Spaniard. "Unfortunately, Fernando doesn’t have a competitive car this year, but whenever he sees a chance, he takes it," he remarked. "Fernando is a phenomenon, just like Hamilton. I believe both contribute significantly to Formula 1. They are real brands." Simultaneously, Briatore emphasized his satisfaction with Alpine’s current driver lineup of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Although Colapinto faced challenges at Enstone initially, Briatore defended him, stating: "Many wanted him to leave last year, but I backed him up, I sheltered him. The boy has talent. Franco has grown a lot. I often ask him if he has a brother because he was a different person last year." Briatore also praised Gasly, saying, "Pierre is another pleasant surprise. As I got to know him, I came to appreciate him greatly. He shows remarkable dedication." Nevertheless, the 76-year-old left the possibility open for future changes. "We’re satisfied with our drivers. We’ll see what unfolds in the future," the Italian added. "Ultimately, my role is to gauge how far we can progress with our current drivers and, if needed, make changes. We will evaluate the opportunities." Sergio Perez has recently been connected to Alpine, Williams, and Aston Martin as the 2027 market continues to develop.
