Villeneuve states that Hamilton is now surpassing Leclerc at Ferrari.
"The choice is straightforward, as Leclerc is significantly lagging behind."
Jacques Villeneuve believes that Lewis Hamilton is taking control of Ferrari away from Charles Leclerc. The 1997 world champion asserts that Hamilton’s recent comeback, highlighted by his win in Barcelona, has revealed vulnerabilities in Leclerc’s standing, even with the Monegasque’s long-term connection to the team and his recent contract extension. "Ferrari needs to focus on Hamilton if they want any chance of success," Villeneuve stated during the Sky F1 show. "The choice is simple, because Leclerc is quite far behind."
Villeneuve contends that Leclerc had ample time to secure his position as Ferrari’s unquestioned leader but did not fully seize the opportunity. "Leclerc had the opportunity to shape the team around him, yet he didn’t," he remarked. "He never had to create anything for himself. Everything was handed to him."
The Canadian feels that Hamilton is now shifting the power dynamics. "Lewis did not have an outstanding season last year," Villeneuve commented. "It requires time to develop." However, he added that Hamilton has now claimed both the car and the team as his own. "Leclerc was content to make a good impression next to Lewis, but when Lewis stepped up, took charge of the car and the team, and started giving his all without reservation, Leclerc was unprepared."
These remarks continue the ongoing public exchange between Villeneuve and Hamilton. Earlier this month in Montreal, Hamilton seemingly took a jab at Villeneuve while talking about legendary drivers. "He was a great driver," Hamilton said regarding Jacques’ father Gilles Villeneuve, "and obviously far superior to his son." Villeneuve later brushed off the comment. "He did make a foolish remark in Montreal," the Canadian stated. "I was wondering, 'Why would he say that?'" "I don’t recall criticizing him, so I don’t believe that was directed at me."
