Briatore anticipates a calm F1 market, with the exception of Verstappen.
"Unfortunately, Fernando lacks a competitive vehicle this year."
Flavio Briatore believes that the Formula 1 driver market might be less dramatic than many anticipate. With rumors surrounding Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Sergio Perez, and other positions, the Alpine executive thinks only one significant transfer is realistically in play. "I think nothing will actually happen," Briatore told Italy’s Auto Moto. "The only change that might happen is Verstappen moving to Mercedes." His statement arises amidst increasing speculation about Verstappen’s future with Red Bull, while Alpine has emerged as a major player in the 2027 discussions. Recent reports suggested a surprising return for Alonso to Enstone and a reunion with Briatore, although Aston Martin swiftly dismissed those assertions. Briatore, who is still associated with Alonso's management, emphasized his admiration for the Spaniard. "Unfortunately, Fernando lacks a competitive car this year, but he grabs any opportunity as soon as he sees it," he stated. "Fernando is a phenomenon, just like Hamilton. I believe both contribute significantly to Formula 1. They are genuine brands." Simultaneously, Briatore expressed his satisfaction with Alpine’s current driver lineup of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Colapinto initially faced challenges at Enstone, but Briatore maintained: "Many wanted him out last year, but I stood by him and protected him. The boy has talent. Franco has matured considerably. I often ask him if he has a brother, as he was a different person last year." Briatore also praised Gasly. "Pierre is another surprise," he said. "Getting to know him, I have come to greatly appreciate him. He shows extraordinary commitment." Nonetheless, the 76-year-old left the possibility of future changes open. "We’re pleased with our drivers. We’ll see what unfolds in the future," the Italian remarked. "Ultimately, my role is to determine the potential we can achieve with our current drivers and, if required, make changes. We will assess the opportunities." Sergio Perez has recently been associated with Alpine, Williams, and Aston Martin as the 2027 market continues to develop.
