Laura Müller on working with Esteban Ocon

In an interview with the official website, Laura Müller talked about the specifics of working as a race engineer for Esteban Ocon…

Laura Müller: “I have always wanted to be a race engineer. Before Haas F1, I worked as a race engineer in other series, and when I joined the team, I transitioned into this role very easily. I already knew everyone, understood whom to approach, what questions to ask, and how everything works.

With the transition to the new regulations, this experience turned out to be especially important. Many new technical solutions and tasks emerged, including energy distribution. In such a situation, it is crucial for the driver and his engineer to feel confident and be able to focus on the main things, and this past experience working with the team has helped Esteban and me a lot.

Esteban is a very determined guy. He always gets what he wants and confidently moves towards his goals. And I, since I always want the best for my car and driver, strive for that too. He sees that I have the same character, that I also always try to achieve my goals. And it works. He trusts me, and I trust him.

I like everything. Although sometimes my job feels like a mother’s care for a child – making sure that Esteban gets behind the wheel on time, that we’ve considered all the details, but overall I am very satisfied.

If there is a free week between races, we spend a lot of time analyzing what was done during the weekend. It is important for the constructors to know where we are hitting the limits of the car's capabilities, what they need to work on – there is always feedback, otherwise, we cannot grow and move forward. We have a small team, so those who work at the track also need to participate in this process.

During the race weekend, we are completely focused on operational work – everything needs to be prepared carefully, and we have to stick to a tight schedule – there is almost no time for reflection. When races follow one after another, we have to stay at the track longer to analyze one weekend and prepare for the next.”
