Sainz leaves Williams in suspense as speculation about 2027 intensifies.

Carlos Sainz states that he has temporarily set aside thoughts concerning his Formula 1 future, despite growing speculation about his potential departure from Williams. The Spanish driver has been rumored to be considering various options for 2027, including a surprising return to the Red Bull stable if Max Verstappen leaves, with Sergio Perez also mentioned as a possible replacement at Williams.

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes that if Sainz were to become available, he would be among the most coveted drivers in the field. "In my opinion, this is currently the most pressing personnel matter in Formula 1," Schumacher commented. "Carlos Sainz is a driver who is consistent, quick, makes few errors, and has a strong reputation for propelling a team forward. He has a significant opportunity to secure another seat."

Schumacher is also of the opinion that Sainz possesses the capability to contend for a championship. "Yes, I think he is capable of that," he stated. "He is a very analytical driver. So, I’ll reiterate — I believe Carlos Sainz has relatively strong offers at the moment and wants to leave Williams. I understand that."

However, Sainz emphasizes his focus on aiding Williams in recovering from a disappointing second season. "Honestly, I’m not considering it because I have a lot of work to do here at Williams," he shared in Austria. "We have numerous simulator sessions and meetings. I even requested that my team give me some space until the summer break, so I can assist Williams in improving our situation as much as possible."

He acknowledged that the summer break might be the time for him to assess his options. "The team is already aware of my intentions and priorities, which are to remain here and commit long-term," he noted. "I believe in the project’s vision, though we have a lot of work ahead."

Sainz also suggested that substantial progress might still be some time away. "We don’t expect to achieve major advancements until the last third of the season," he explained. "During that time, we are aiming to introduce developments that I hope will keep us competitive and in the vicinity of the top ten. But until we reach that last stage, I’m afraid there won’t be anything extraordinary."

He is confident that Williams’ issues do not stem from financial constraints. "Money is not the issue at Williams," Sainz asserted. "We have the budget and the management's investment across various areas." Instead, he believes enhancements are needed in other aspects.

"The expectation was not to completely bridge the gap, but rather to maintain approximately where we finished last year. Given the wind tunnel hours available, we anticipated making progress, but it was clear that the leading teams are performing at an entirely different level. The team has heavily invested in facilities, but much of the necessary improvement lies in processes, efficiency, and methods of operation. That’s where we really need to get things right."
