Sainz promises 'time off', while Vowles downplays concerns of departure.
Carlos Sainz emphasizes that he is dedicating even more of his efforts to Williams as the team embarks on a vital development phase at Silverstone. After a disappointing start to 2026, Williams enters its home race with a new front wing and nose, marking the first step of a wider upgrade plan that will extend throughout the summer and lead to a more extensive package at Baku. "We understand this upgrade isn’t going to drastically change our position; it won’t propel us to the top of the midfield, but it will assist us in rejoining the competition," stated Sainz.
He acknowledged that Williams has experienced a decline. "In the last two races, we’ve clearly ranked ninth, a step behind Haas and two or three behind RB. We were nearly lapped in Austria, highlighting how far behind we are. The top of the midfield is distant, and this wing should aid in closing the gap, although I’m not anticipating miracles."
With ongoing speculation about his future beyond 2026, Sainz confirmed that his primary focus is on aiding Williams' progress. "I was in the simulator at 8 this morning and arrived at the track at 12," he shared. "I spent two to three hours there working to help the team grasp the front wing and its energy. Achieving this requires personal energy and a commitment to the task."
He further stated, "With my blend of experience and youth, I’m ready to forgo much of my free time to assist the team and spend time at the factory, which is essential for car and team development. We collaborate effectively, staying in close contact after every simulator session to guide the team in the right direction. We are doing everything within our power to help."
Team principal James Vowles also believes that the upgrade strategy will eventually bring Williams back to the forefront of the midfield. "We were able to contend for points in Miami, Montreal, and Monaco, and I believe we’ll soon see significant advancements in that regard," he noted. "Silverstone represents a small yet important step, with minor details that will be consistent in most races. As I hinted earlier, there will be a considerable change coming ahead of Baku."
Vowles dismissed claims that Sainz might already be exploring options for 2027. "I feel very at ease with the situation of Alex and Carlos," he asserted. "Our mission is to develop this car and demonstrate our potential for meaningful progress. That’s our only focus. I’m confident that the issues we faced during the winter won’t reoccur, which is why I remain calm and assured. Carlos and Alex are content with their circumstances and wish to join us on this journey."
