Some of the most well-known automotive journalists in the world also happen to have impressive car collections. Chris Harris has a Ferrari 512 Testarossa and a Porsche 911 GT3 Touring, among other unique vehicles; Doug DeMuro owns a Porsche Carrera GT and a Ford GT. Meanwhile, I have… none of those. My best is an old Ford dump truck. While that may inhibit my ability to acquire Ferrari’s next flagship model, I hope McMurtry—the creator of the astonishing Speirling fan car—won’t judge me for it.
My assessment is based solely on the boutique manufacturer’s website, which features a questionnaire for potential buyers of the Speirling Pure production variant. Unlike some brands that require you to have a collection of their top models before allowing a purchase of the latest, McMurtry seems much more welcoming. All I need to buy it is $1.3 million, plus taxes and fees.
McMurtry poses a few straightforward questions, such as, “Where do you live?” and “How do you plan to use the car?” I think both are pertinent. Although they do inquire about your current car collection, it’s at the end of the questionnaire and they don’t expect you to already own another McMurtry since this will be the first one.
As far as I can tell, I’m not required to reveal my net worth or social media following. Instead, McMurtry appears more interested in which race tracks I enjoy (Maple Valley Raceway from Forza springs to mind). There’s even a section for any questions I might want to ask! How thoughtful is that?
Honestly, what I’m most eager to know is the height and weight limit for driving one of these vehicles. With the electric car boasting 1,000 horsepower, a 0-60 time of 1.55 seconds, and over 3G cornering, it seems intense enough for a driver of Stig’s stature. What if you happen to be 6’5” and 290 pounds like I am? Perhaps that’s a question I should think about asking.
In any case, this is an extraordinary car engineered to set records and push the boundaries of what’s possible. The fan and downforce are its most impressive features, and the Speirling is eligible to compete in Global Time Attack if you're interested. Just be sure your finances are prepared for the expense.
