Some of the most beloved automotive journalists in the world also happen to have impressive car collections. Chris Harris possesses a Ferrari 512 Testarossa and a Porsche 911 GT3 Touring, among other remarkable vehicles, while Doug DeMuro boasts a Porsche Carrera GT and a Ford GT. As for me... I have none of those. The best I can manage is an old Ford dump truck. Though this might mean I won't be able to acquire Maranello's next flagship model, I hope that McMurtry—creator of the extraordinary Speirling fan car—won't hold it against me.
I'm basing my judgment solely on the boutique manufacturer's website, which features a questionnaire for prospective buyers of the Speirling Pure production variant. Unlike some manufacturers who require you to have a garage full of their iconic models before allowing you to purchase the latest one, McMurtry appears to be much more inviting. All that stands between me and buying the car is the $1.3 million price tag, plus taxes and fees.
McMurtry poses a few straightforward questions, such as, "Where do you live?" and "How do you intend to use the car?" I find both inquiries to be pertinent. While they do inquire about your current car collection, it's placed at the bottom of the list, and they don't seem to expect you to already own another McMurtry since this model is the first.
As far as I can determine, I don't need to reveal my net worth or my social media follower count. Instead, McMurtry is more curious about which race tracks I enjoy (Maple Valley Raceway from Forza comes to mind). The form even provides a space for any questions you might have! How thoughtful is that?
Honestly, the part that intrigues me most is the height and weight restrictions for driving one of these cars. With its 1,000 horsepower, 1.55-second zero-to-60 time, and greater than 3G cornering, it looks powerful enough for a Stig-sized driver. But what if you’re 6'5" and 290 pounds like I am? That might be a question worth asking.
In any case, this is a genuinely exceptional car designed to break records and redefine the limits of possibility. The downforce and fan system are its most impressive features, and the Speirling is eligible to compete in Global Time Attack, should you wish to do so. Just ensure your finances are prepared for the investment.
