Vasseur responds to Wolff's 'cheating' accusation.

Vasseur responds to Wolff's 'cheating' accusation.

Frederic Vasseur has charged Toto Wolff with suggesting that Ferrari is cheating after Mercedes expressed concerns about the Italian team’s rapid development pace amidst Formula 1’s budget constraints. These remarks add another layer to a continuous dialogue since Wolff confessed he was surprised by Ferrari's ability to unveil significant upgrades while adhering to the cost cap.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Vasseur remarked: "When I heard that, I thought it was a joke. I found it ironic that it came from Toto himself. I’ve never taken the time to calculate Mercedes’ development or budget - the FIA will handle that. I'm not wasting any energy on this and I'm not the least bit concerned about Ferrari’s plans."

When the topic arose again at Silverstone, the Ferrari team principal became more direct. "When Red Bull is developing or when Mercedes is developing, they are brilliant. When we are working on our developments, we are cheating. I think it’s necessary to tone that down. We haven’t introduced more parts than Red Bull or anyone else."

When specifically asked if he believed Wolff was accusing Ferrari of cheating, Vasseur responded: "If you think we exceed the cost cap, that suggests a certain direction."

These comments seem to have put a strain on the longstanding friendship between the two. When inquired if he had communicated with Wolff since the remarks, Vasseur smiled: "I think it’s better not to speak." He also declined to speculate why Wolff had focused on Ferrari. "If you want to ask something of Toto, go to him and ask why he mentioned me. Don’t put that question to me. But honestly, I have no idea, and I found it a bit strange."

Vasseur also dismissed the idea that Ferrari's extensive list of declared upgrades necessarily indicated a larger development initiative compared to its competitors. "Sometimes, it may seem like we’re bringing a substantial upgrade, but it’s merely a modification of a few parts, nothing more," he said.

He also downplayed reports stating that Ferrari's second ADUO engine upgrade is set for Monza. "You seem to have more details about the timing of the engine upgrade than I do," Vasseur joked. "It’s always beneficial to attend a press conference to gather information."
