      After the finish of the British Grand Prix, the stewards reviewed the actions of Carlos Sainz, who committed an infraction while the safety car was on track. At the moment when the race control notified that lapped cars could overtake the safety car, the Williams driver did so. However, Carlos was not a lapped car at the checkpoint, and his car number was not listed among those drivers who could overtake. For the violation, the stewards issued Carlos Sainz one penalty lap – a rare punishment, but one of the possible ones according to the FIA International Sporting Code. After the penalty was applied, Carlos Sainz dropped from twelfth to seventeenth place in the British Grand Prix standings.
