Sainz questions the upcoming 'B' car upgrade from Williams.
"It features a new chassis and additional related components."
Carlos Sainz has expressed skepticism regarding Williams' expectations that a significant upgrade package later this season will turn around the team's underwhelming 2026 season. Team principal James Vowles at Silverstone detailed an ambitious development strategy, describing the car set to debut around the Azerbaijan GP as essentially a "B-spec" Williams. "The best way to put it is that it’s a B-spec car," Vowles stated. "It has a new chassis and other accompanying parts." He mentioned that Williams will roll out smaller upgrades at Spa and Budapest prior to a more substantial package, which includes weight reduction, at Zandvoort. "In fact, for Baku, we will have almost an entirely new car. That will certainly be a significant enhancement." However, Sainz remains doubtful. The Spanish driver has consistently raised concerns about Williams' stagnation in development this season, while speculation about his long-term prospects continues. "In Baku, we should meet the minimum weight requirement, but we’ve shed a lot of weight since the start of the season," he noted. "We’ve also introduced upgrade packages, but unfortunately, nothing so far indicates that the Baku package will be a significant advancement, because if none of our past upgrades have shown progress, why would this one?" Sainz asserts that Williams must first comprehend the reasons behind the ineffectiveness of its upgrades before anticipating a breakthrough. "We need to first understand why our current upgrades aren't working before bringing anything to Baku. It will represent a significant reduction in weight, but concerning aerodynamics, which ultimately is what truly counts, we need to continue addressing that."
