Is Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tesla’s radar as the company explores new regions for its robotaxi service?

On Saturday, an observant reader named George from Victory & Reseda noticed a Tesla Cybercab in an unexpected site: Minneapolis, Minnesota. George reported that there were actually two gold Teslas calmly parked without supervision in a parking lot. Why could this be?

George informed The Drive that the two Cybercabs were located in a parking lot adjacent to a Tesla-owned office in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park and were clearly visible from MN Highway 610.

According to George, the two vehicles had VINs ending around 650, suggesting these might be early production versions.

Both vehicles were equipped with steering wheels but did not have a plastic cover around the steering columns. The two production-ready black leather seats seen previously were also present.

EPA documents indicated Cybercab specifications that Tesla has kept private. The filings showed that the two-seater coupe features a 219-horsepower front motor and weighs 3,113 pounds. It appears to be powered by a smaller battery pack of about 50 kWh, offering a driving range of approximately 280 miles per charge.

Currently, Waymo is actively establishing its presence to introduce its autonomous robotaxi service in the Minneapolis region. Two weeks ago, I observed several of their next-generation robotaxis, produced by Zeekr, being charged by Waymo staff in the western suburb of St. Louis Park.

At present, Tesla operates its robotaxi service in five U.S. cities: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and San Francisco. The pressing question remains: what are two Cybercabs doing in Minneapolis? Is Tesla looking to extend its robotaxi service to Minnesota?
