FIA considers an independent V8 engine supplier for 2031.
"It will be an engine chosen by the FIA."
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has disclosed new information regarding Formula 1’s proposed engine formula for post-2030, which may include an independent supplier for customer teams. In light of significant criticism directed at the completely new regulations for 2026, Formula 1 is already developing a more straightforward, lighter, and cost-effective engine formula for 2031 that focuses on V8 engines.
Ben Sulayem has consistently mentioned that the upcoming generation of engines will have only a minimal hybrid component while greatly lowering costs, weight, and complexity, and enhancing the sound. The FIA president has also noted that an independent manufacturer chosen by the governing body could supply customer teams.
"There will be no regulation over the teams, so Team A won’t be favored over Team B in receiving engines," Ben Sulayem stated during a roundtable discussion with British media at Silverstone. "If it's financially feasible, we’ll ensure there is one engine available for all B teams, preventing anyone from exploiting them by saying, ‘Vote this way, or you won't get a good engine.’"
"It will be an engine selected by the FIA that teams will be permitted to use." This proposal aims to lessen the influence of manufacturers over customer teams while offering independents an option beyond traditional supply agreements.
Ben Sulayem believes that this new formula could potentially reduce research and development costs by up to 50 percent and decrease car weight by approximately 100 kilograms. The FIA is also looking into whether refueling should be reintroduced alongside the new engine regulations, although Ben Sulayem acknowledged that the financial and logistical aspects still need thorough evaluation. "If it's done properly, it won’t be an issue," he remarked. "We are investigating the matter, but nothing has been decided yet."
