FIA seeks an independent supplier for V8 engines by 2031.
"It will be an engine chosen by the FIA."
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has shared new information about Formula 1’s anticipated engine regulations post-2030, which may include an independent supplier for customer teams. In light of significant criticism regarding the new regulations for 2026, Formula 1 is already planning a simpler, lighter, and more affordable engine formula for 2031 focused on V8 engines. Ben Sulayem has consistently pointed out that the next generation of engines will feature only a minimal hybrid component while significantly lowering costs, weight, and complexity while also increasing noise.
The FIA president mentioned that an independent manufacturer selected by the governing body could also provide engines to customer teams. "There will be no influence over the teams, with Team A versus Team B regarding who receives the engines," Ben Sulayem said in a roundtable discussion with British media at Silverstone. "If it’s economically feasible, we’ll have one engine for all the B teams, ensuring that no one can manipulate them by saying, 'Vote this way, or you won’t get a competitive engine.'"
"It will be an engine chosen by the FIA that teams will be permitted to use." This proposal aims to lessen the manufacturers’ control over customer teams and provide independents with an alternative to conventional supply agreements. Ben Sulayem believes the new formula could potentially halve research and development costs and decrease car weight by approximately 100 kilograms. The FIA is also exploring the possibility of reintroducing refuelling alongside the new engine regulations, though Ben Sulayem acknowledged that the financial and logistical aspects still need thorough evaluation. "It’s manageable if implemented correctly," he commented. "We are examining the topic, and so far, no decisions have been made."
