Chandhok pilots a unique McLaren MP4/8B at Goodwood.

Karun Chandhok, over the years of collaboration with Sky Sports, has seen almost every existing Formula 1 car in the world, and he has had the chance to drive many of them. But this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, he got behind the wheel of a truly unique creation by Neil Oatley, the former chief designer of McLaren – the MP4/8B with a Lamborghini V12 engine.

It never raced, as in 1993 it only went as far as testing, but during those tests, the car was driven by Ayrton Senna, and then the young Mika Hakkinen joined him, whose collaboration with McLaren was just beginning at that time.

That was over three decades ago, and now the McLaren MP4/8B has hit the track at Goodwood for the first time – here are Karun Chandhok's words:

"This is a truly special car, and at Goodwood, I have driven various types of vehicles up the hill climb, but for the first time, I can't stop the shaking in my hands! The car is simply incredible; it is based on the MP4/8, which Ayrton Senna, Michael Andretti, and later Mika Hakkinen drove in 1993.

During that period, the McLaren team changed engine suppliers many times, dealing with four different manufacturers over four seasons, but there was also a fifth – Lamborghini.

The last time the car was tested was in 1993 – Ayrton drove it in Estoril, Mika in Silverstone – and now it is here, at Goodwood. Over the past 18 months, McLaren specialists have done an incredible job, as they had to find such a Lamborghini 12-cylinder engine, restore it and this car, and prepare it for the show at Goodwood.

To be honest, I experienced fantastic sensations, primarily from the sound of this engine! When you race down this track, the feelings are simply indescribable! I believe the comparable emotions I felt were only while driving the 2004 Williams car with a BMW engine that revved up to 19,000 RPM.

The McLaren MP4/8B is very light, weighing only 500 kg; it is very fast and loud! And the fact that it was once driven by Ayrton Senna makes this experience even more special! Moreover, it has never participated in races."
