Newey: We are guilty of not listening to the drivers.
Adrian Newey, the head and technical director of Aston Martin F1, believes that the current problems are partly due to the fact that the team did not consult with its drivers during the development of the AMR26 car.
According to Newey, as reported by The Race, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are very frustrated that they cannot achieve normal results, as the team is constantly plagued by issues related to both reliability and insufficient performance of the car.
"Right now, together with Fernando and Lance, we are analyzing everything that is planned in terms of car upgrades, and everything that is supposed to be done in preparation for the 2027 season," Newey said. "Although it may not be visible from the outside, we are now listening very carefully to their comments and trying to act accordingly.
When drivers do not feel that they are being heard, they naturally become very frustrated; this is a normal human reaction. We are probably at fault for not spending enough time with Fernando, Lance, and Jack Crawford, our reserve driver. You could say that we are now trying to make up for this in the process of upgrading the AMR26."
The first part of the technical upgrades package from Aston Martin F1 is expected to be presented at the Hungarian stage of the season, with the second part coming after the summer break in Zandvoort. Additionally, Honda's engine department promises to prepare an upgraded version of the power unit for the Dutch Grand Prix.
According to The Race, the updated version of the AMR26 will have much more efficient aerodynamics, and the chassis will overall become significantly lighter, shedding about 10-15 kg.
