The next phase of The Grand Tour is here. We now know the new hosts—Throttle House's Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, along with the popular train TikToker Francis Bourgeois—and we have the release date for their first season. Six episodes will be available on Prime Video starting September 4, which falls on a Friday.
Launched with the slogan, “New Show. Same Knobs,” the revamped Grand Tour promises “big adventures, questionable car choices, and lots of laughs,” featuring the following scenarios, all taken directly from Amazon’s press release:
- Crossing the Angolan desert in track cars
- Discovering Malaysia’s lively car culture
- Traveling to California to test state-of-the-art performance cars
- Taking on fighter pilots and even a nation's legal system
This pretty much covers classic TG/GT: major journeys in vehicles poorly equipped for the job, cultural excursions involving cars that are out of place, and bending the limits of international law. The announcement included some memorable quotes from the hosts, and Bourgeois certainly painted a vivid picture with this remark:
“Since finishing the filming of the series, I’ve been replaying every moment in my mind. It has made me laugh, my heart race, and my stomach turn… recalling the tent I shared with Thomas and James, filled with sulfuric farts while Angolan jackals prowled outside. It feels like a dream, but knowing we’ll soon share our adventures makes me incredibly excited!”
Farts and jackals— I must admit, this new series is certainly hitting all the right notes. While Holland and Engelsman are likely familiar to many, those less acquainted with Bourgeois and what he could bring to a car show should check out this train-chasing video he made almost two years ago with Chris Harris. It was actually suggested by a commenter (thank you!) on my colleague Andrew’s previous blog regarding the Grand Tour reboot, and it’s an enjoyable watch featuring a Mercedes-AMG CLK DTM Cabriolet. It’s a solid formula for success; we’ll see how the feature-length project turns out.
