Vasseur: Too many problems and mistakes

Ferrari was considered the favorite for the Hungarian Grand Prix; on Friday, the red cars were very fast, but in the end, the competitors proved to be stronger. The team principal summarized the weekend...

Frédéric Vasseur: "It's difficult to fully assess our race pace; the key question is whether you're driving on a clear track or in traffic. The pure pace of our car this weekend was higher than in Spa or Silverstone. We led in the first practice, were ahead in the second. We were able to fight for pole with Lewis – we lost the pole by just a hundredth of a second. After showing the first and second fastest times on Friday, you expect a better result than fourth and fifth place in the race. We made too many mistakes, starting from the start, with the penalty, and with Max overtaking us on track. We lost 0.2-0.3 seconds at every pit stop. The execution in the race was poor. If we had a good start from the front row, the race would have turned out completely differently, and the reason for the failure is more in the execution than in the pace. We did the right thing by getting ahead of Verstappen with a 'cutback', but then we lost the position on track again. At the end of the race, we switched both cars to Soft, as Lewis had a worn Hard set and was vulnerable to attack. On the positive side, we reduced the gap to Mercedes a bit. Now it's time to recharge the batteries to come back in better shape for the second half of the season."
