The latest in car news and reviews, without any nonsense.

Performance side-by-sides resemble the sports cars of the past in multiple ways. They’re not only an immense source of enjoyment, but currently, the industry is experiencing a revival of horsepower competition. Polaris has introduced a new leader by equipping the RZR Pro R’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a turbocharger, delivering a staggering 275 hp.

This new top performer is named the RZR Pro R Boost, boasting 50 hp more than its naturally aspirated counterpart. That earlier model was a standard not too long ago, but it was outmatched by the Can-Am Maverick R, which produces 240 hp. Last year saw the arrival of Kawasaki’s 250-hp Teryx H2, and now Polaris has reclaimed its title. (Rest assured, they’re all extremely fast.)

Polaris is serious about performance, opting for a 60-millimeter Garrett turbo designed to optimize performance at elevations up to 10,000 feet. The company asserts that it can achieve the peak output of 275 hp at 7,000 rpm and 223 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm even in ambient temperatures as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the top speed remains at 92 miles per hour, it likely reaches that speed much more swiftly.

Dune enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Polaris has not neglected the rest of the drivetrain to accommodate the additional power. The engineering team focused heavily on cooling, implementing a new dual-radiator configuration that benefits the engine, turbo, and transmission. Furthermore, a new high-capacity clutching system improves airflow. Polaris states that it has incorporated cooling fins and a larger clutch design to help prolong the life of the valuable CVT belt.

In terms of durability, the RZR Pro R Boost features tougher, reinforced driveline components—particularly half shafts, notorious for breaking at inopportune times. The front drive system has also been upgraded. This is excellent news for those who faced issues with the “regular” RZR Pro R’s front differential in the past.

While the powertrain clearly holds the spotlight, the premium RZR is equipped with Dynamix suspension that includes rear bump control on Ultimate models and full Dynamix DVS on Ultra models. For those unfamiliar with Polaris terminology, this means active sway bar links that adjust up to 200 times per second, enhancing the vehicle's responsiveness to the terrain. Buyers of the Ultra model also receive a carbon fiber hood and seat bezels, an MPI GT steering wheel, and 32-inch BF Goodrich tires.

Just be ready to shell out for this impressive machine. The RZR Pro R Boost begins at $49,999, with the Ultimate two- and four-door models priced at $53,999, while the Ultra trim starts at $52,999 and goes up to $56,999. If there was any uncertainty, this Polaris clearly stands as the most expensive side-by-side available in the market, as well as the most powerful.
