Sainz is said to have declined an offer from Williams.
Carlos Sainz has reportedly turned down Williams' latest contract proposal as doubts about his future in 2027 increase. The Spaniard indicated he would take the August break to carefully evaluate his options after a lackluster first half of the season. According to Marca, discussions with Williams are ongoing, and Sainz is inclined towards a short extension that allows for the possibility of leaving if a better opportunity arises.
The widely mentioned annual figure of 30 million euros may be inflated, as Marca points out that it would be close to three times his current pay and could strain Williams' budget. Sky Deutschland analyst Ralf Schumacher has stated that Sainz has already declined an offer. "I’m intrigued by Sainz," he commented. "He apparently turned down a proposal from Williams." Schumacher speculates that this choice might be linked to changes happening elsewhere in the market. "Could that be related to the chance of Max Verstappen departing from Red Bull?" he questioned. "Oscar Piastri has lost some of his appeal. Or could Sainz be heading to Audi?"
Audi has previously been associated with Sainz, while Sergio Perez is also emerging as a potential alternative for Williams should Sainz depart. Schumacher also noted that the situation at Williams is becoming increasingly challenging. "Things are tense at Williams," the German remarked. "The team made a significant error with the car. Vowles, who was tasked with building a car from the ground up under the new regulations, clearly hasn't set everything up properly." "A conflict is likely to arise there too."
This uncertainty coincides with ongoing speculation surrounding Verstappen. German journalist Ralf Bach reports that Red Bull has proposed a lucrative five-year deal to the Dutch driver, but Verstappen desires an option for early exit and wishes to commit only through 2027. "Max wants to assess whether Red Bull can provide a car that enables him to win races and contend for the championship this time," Bach explained. "If that doesn’t materialize, he’ll have the choice at the end of 2027 to decide whether he’s ready to leave and whether he wants to continue in Formula 1 at all."
