South Africa is ready to host both the F1 race and the Olympics.
More than 33 years have passed since the last South African Grand Prix, and since then there have been periodic unsuccessful attempts to bring this race back to the Formula 1 calendar. In an interview with London radio station City AM, South African Sports Minister Gaiton McKenzie addressed this topic, stating that his country wants to secure both the Olympics and to host the national Grand Prix again. "The Olympics will come to the African continent for the first time," McKenzie said, referring to South Africa's bid to host the 2036 Summer Games. "We also plan to hold a number of other competitions. People don't want to talk about these issues, but the uncomfortable truth is that there have always been arguments against South Africa, which is why we have neither a Formula 1 race nor the Olympics. Look at the African continent and compare it to Europe: Monza, Imola, and Monaco are very close together, and there you have three Formula 1 races, while in all of Africa – not a single one..." During the Hungarian leg of the World Championship, Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, confirmed: "I can only say that negotiations in Africa are progressing very successfully." This concerns plans to hold a race in the near future at the reconstructed racetrack in Kyalami, which once hosted the South African Grand Prix. But, as is often the case, one of the main questions is how another race will be included in a season calendar that already has 24 events, especially since starting next year, some of them will already be held on a rotational basis.
