Why Audi Can't Manufacture the Nuvolari in R8 Quantities at an R8 Price

Audi’s 1,000-horsepower Nuvolari supercar bears a striking resemblance to the old R8. In fact, it even has similar foundations to a Lamborghini, similar to how the original “everyday supercar” did. While Audi is keen on creating a third-generation R8, the company has firmly resisted steering the Nuvolari in that direction.
Instead, Audi has positioned the Nuvolari as a more exclusive halo model. Its unexpected emergence feels contrary to the careful planning that led to the R8's creation. Is this the reason why the Nuvolari is likely to remain a limited-run model rather than evolve into a mass-produced supercar?
The Drive Editor-in-Chief Kyle Cheromcha spoke with Rouven Mohr, Audi's chief technology officer and head of R&D, to learn why this unique offering replaced another R8. The answer involves multiple factors, which go beyond just manufacturing logistics.
"First, timing was crucial, as we wanted to align with the first year of Formula One," Mohr explained.
To achieve this speed, Audi assembled a relatively small and agile team, differing from the larger groups usually involved in a project like the R8. This decision led to some compromises regarding the potential scale that comes with a more extensive project.
"There are elements that allow for the short timeline that cannot be applied to mass production," Mohr noted. "We opted for a small volume to ensure speed and accepted higher material costs because we chose carbon technology. The timeline for tooling in carbon technology is significantly quicker."
"If you choose metal," Mohr added, "the time taken to create the tool substantially impacts your industrialization timeline. This approach is definitely not applicable for mass production, as it wouldn't be speedy enough."
Another crucial timing issue arose as well. Missing the desired launch timeframe would have forced Audi to redesign the Nuvolari’s powertrain to meet a new regulatory framework.
"Secondly, we aimed to adhere to the regulatory window transitioning from Euro 6 to Euro 7, as any delay would greatly increase our efforts," Mohr stated. "This means we must produce the vehicles for Europe within a specific timeframe; otherwise, we miss the opportunity."
To truly benefit from economies of scale, Audi would need to manufacture the Nuvolari in much larger quantities, which brings its challenges—especially given the ongoing increase in prices.
"Reducing costs is simply unfeasible with material prices as they are," he said.
This situation places Audi's initial expenses at a considerable height, making it risky to ask customers to pay a premium for something that is mass-produced. Audi prefers to rely on the Nuvolari’s niche appeal to capture the interest of car collectors. Removing that exclusive aspect would weaken the business rationale for the Nuvolari.
"We have chosen this technology, but it's so costly that it wouldn't make sense to produce 10,000 units because the market wouldn't support that quantity without losing exclusivity," Mohr explained.
"We have consistently emphasized that the Nuvolari was never intended to be a successor to the R8," Mohr said. "It’s a different concept, more aligned with a halo brand vision related to our Formula One involvement."
