As Americans, we enjoy access to many impressive trucks. It's difficult to complain with options like the Ford F-150 Raptor R, Ram TRX SRT, and Chevy Silverado ZR2, among others. However, there’s still a place for the Ford Ranger Super Duty, particularly in its new 6×6 form.
The Ranger Super Duty is precisely what its name implies: a midsize truck equipped with more robust components. It can tow up to 9,920 pounds and carry a payload of 4,370 pounds in its standard version, due to an enhanced suspension paired with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. While markets like Australia readily embrace this model, the six-wheeler shown here was developed for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) program.
Interestingly, it seems to feature six-lug wheels, unlike the "regular" Ranger Super Duty, which has eight-lug wheels.
Ford already offers a tray-bed version of this truck, but this model takes it further by incorporating an additional axle. “We engineered Ranger for conversion from day one,” said Jim Baumbick, president of Ford Europe. The Ranger Super Duty 6×6 is specifically designed for both troop transport and as a battlefield ambulance.
The cab of the truck is also designed for these roles. It includes a 12-inch screen, and while wireless Apple CarPlay may not be essential for its functions, the display allows users to effectively manage “third-party tactical mission software,” according to Ford. Additionally, it features pre-wired auxiliary switches for emergency lighting, communication, or other uses.
As of now, there is no confirmation that Ford will provide these trucks to the UK Ministry of Defense. They were designed to compete for the government’s LMV program, so another vehicle may ultimately be chosen. Nevertheless, I believe Ford should manufacture these for public sale, including to me—for work, of course.
