Newey: Motors could be a factor in dominance for a long time to come
Adrian Newey, the famous designer of racing cars, believes that in 2026 with the transition to the new technical regulations in Formula 1 may begin a period of dominance of one team, as it was with Mercedes in 2014. "I think we should allow a high probability that in Formula 1 will begin a competition of motors, - argued Newey in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport. - The point is that I do not remember another case, when in Formula 1 simultaneously changed the regulations on the chassis and on the engines, when, as in this case, the regulations on the chassis were drawn up in an attempt to somehow compensate for what is provided by the regulations on the power units. All in all, it brings a kind of extra dimension. I suppose the engine manufacturers learned a lesson to some extent after 2014 when it turned out that compared to Mercedes they had prepared worse. But it is possible that one of the engine manufacturers will still achieve superiority, and the transition to the new regulations will make powertrains a factor of dominance. At least in the beginning. And if someone creates an internal combustion engine that is superior to other engines, it is possible that such engines will dominate for the entire period of the new regulations. The rules are designed in such a way that it will be very hard for those who find themselves behind to get back. If someone's dominance will be associated with the electric part of the powertrain, then the opportunities to catch up are much greater. Since since the end of April, I have not actually worked in Formula 1, I do not have a detailed understanding of the new regulations. Of course, that part of it, which relates to the power units, was published some time ago, but I am much less familiar with that part of it, which regulates everything that is connected with the chassis, its dynamic characteristics and with aerodynamics. So I have a lot of things to sort out when I get to work (in Aston Martin F1). If you had told me 12 months ago that I would part with Red Bull and then absolutely start again, I would have said, "No, that can't happen, you're crazy". But for various reasons I had the feeling that if I stayed with Red Bull, it would be unfair to myself. And that was the first difficult decision: to stay or not to stay? Of course, I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to be fair to myself, I couldn't stay. And after I made this decision, I thought about what I will do at the next stage of career". March 3, Adrian Newey will start working at Aston Martin. His role is officially called "managing technical partner" - according to Lawrence Stroll, the owner of the team, it means that he will be "a leader, setting the direction of development". Newey will also be among the shareholders of Aston Martin F1, but most importantly, he is entrusted to reform the team and reshape its technical department as he sees fit.
