The Audi Q6 E-Tron Off-Road Concept Offers a Bold Approach to Off-Roading

Audi elevates the essence of Quattro with its latest prototype. The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road embodies a concept ready for the SEMA Show, featuring large tires, a substantial lift kit, and prominent roof-mounted lights. However, this all-wheel drive electric SUV is not just a concept; it boasts impressive climbing capabilities. That 100-percent grade? No problem.
The Q6 E-Tron is built on Volkswagen Group’s new global electric vehicle platform, the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). The standard Q6 E-Tron offers the expected luxury comfort and high performance. Forget the notion that it’s only suitable for smooth, well-maintained roads; the off-road concept can tackle terrains without needing roads, trails, or even a level surface.
With its newly designed portal axles, the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road boosts the torque delivered to the wheels by 50 percent, compared to conventional portal axles that only increase torque by 20 to 30 percent. This allows the total torque at all wheels to reach 9,883 lb-ft, an impressive increase of 3,245 lb-ft.
Additionally, while the new off-road suspension does limit the Q6 E-Tron concept’s top speed to 108 mph (the standard Q6 E-Tron and SQ6 E-Tron can achieve 130 and 143 mph, respectively), speed becomes less of a priority when navigating trails.
The advantage of the enhanced suspension is that it enables better climbing capabilities, even on steep 100-percent slopes, which equates to a 45-degree angle when calculating rise versus run. This translates to formidable blind hill climbs on various surfaces, yet the Audi team claims it’s manageable.
“This vehicle can claim new ground,” stated Audi CEO Gernot Döllner in a press release. “The Q6 E-Tron offroad concept reinterprets quattro. The model showcases the potential of our platform for all-electric vehicles today.”
Potential is an encouraging term to hear, especially in this context. The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road is full of possibilities, as it incorporates conventional elements. The electric vehicle concept has dual motors that deliver a combined output of 380 kW (509 horsepower), along with a wider track (increased by 9.8 inches) and a taller ride height (increased by 6.3 inches).
Far from merely a display model, the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept will participate in the ice racing events at the upcoming F.A.T. Ice Race, scheduled to take place on a frozen lake in the Austrian Alps on February 1.
