Lamborghini plans to modernize SC63 hypercar

      The Lamborghini Squadra Corse team is not giving up on modernizing its only hypercar, the SC63, with which it competes in the American IMSA series in 2025. The Italian team begins its second season in the most powerful category of endurance racing, limited to one crew, for which Daniil Kvyat, Roman Grozhan, Mirko Bortolotti and Edoardo Mortara compete in IMSA.

      The Lamborghini SC63 sports prototype is based on the chassis of the famous French company Ligier, but equipped with a hybrid power plant of its own production, and this year the technical support during the race weekends is entrusted to the American company Riley. In the program for the season - only five races, which are included in a separate standings of the Michelin Cup, and one of them, the "24 Hours of Daytona", is already behind. However, there the crew Kvyat because of problems with the cooling system came off the track after 34 laps. In Lamborghini emphasized that the upcoming season will be devoted to improving the machine, which is clearly inferior in efficiency hypercars other factory teams. Maurizio Leschiutta, who until recently headed the BMW factory program in endurance racing, is responsible for this task. "First of all, we pay attention to the dynamic characteristics of the SC63, the work of suspension and aerodynamics, because we want to achieve improvements in these areas - said the head of racing programs Lamborghini. - "I always say, 'It's better to do less, but trying to do it better'. So first of all we want to focus on these three pain points that we know and add to some extent..." Rowen Mohr, Lamborghini's technical director, added: "It is clear that in general we are always trying to make improvements in these areas and we have already made a step forward during the winter off-season. First of all it's the kinematics of the rear suspension, aerodynamics, but also for a race car the weight issue is always relevant. The car must not be too light, otherwise it won't pass homologation, but in any case we can add ballast. The prospects of Lamborghini returning to European endurance racing, especially Le Mans, are still vague, and when Stefan Winkelmann, the company's chief executive, was asked about it, he gave a rather vague answer. "Le Mans is a famous race that attracts a lot of attention to the teams participating in it," he said. - "It was important for us to be there, and we did well last race, finishing 10th - we didn't even expect to beat teams with more experience at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But you always have to choose between the emotional element of motorsport and the interests of a company that wants to be economically successful. We can't be guided by emotions alone. But I would like to return to Le Mans as soon as possible". Lamborghini had to leave the WEC, because under the new rules of the World Endurance Championship every factory team competing in the Hypercar category must declare at the start of two cars, and this, as once explained in the Italian company, is no longer consistent with its strategy.
