In the midst of a 'ridiculous rule', Sainz is appointed as GPDA director.
Carlos Sainz has been appointed as the new director of the Formula 1 drivers’ union, known as the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA). This appointment comes at a critical time for the GPDA, as significant negotiations are underway to ease the strictness of the FIA's so-called 'driver swearing ban.' Sainz, who is transitioning from Ferrari to Williams in 2025, voiced his opposition to the ban last week, stating that while swearing during press conferences may be contentious, drivers should have complete freedom to express themselves within the cockpit.
Former F1 driver Mika Salo is in full agreement. He commented to Iltalehti newspaper, "It’s an absolutely ridiculous rule. I am entirely on the side of the drivers. Formula 1 is the only sport globally where athletes have a microphone in front of them at all times. With adrenaline rushing and emotions running high, the feedback on team radio is immediate. It is unreasonable to expect that not a single inappropriate word will be spoken in that context," the Finnish driver asserts. "Finnish javelin throwers also let out screams, yet no one considers fining them."
In addition to advocating for the drivers' interests, the GPDA's main objective is to enhance safety. When asked about his hopes for F1 in the next 25 years, Fernando Alonso stated, "I hope it stays close to what it is today. The most significant change over the past 25 years has been in safety. The cars are now very safe, but previously, there were considerable risks for drivers, mechanics, and marshals. Formula 1 was still quite dangerous."
Regarding Sainz's new role in the GPDA, the organization, led by Alex Wurz, announced in a statement that he is "taking over the position left open by Sebastian Vettel." The other director of the GPDA is George Russell. Sainz expressed, "I am passionate about my sport and believe that we drivers have a responsibility to collaborate with stakeholders to advance the sport in various areas."
