Screaming V10 engines might make a comeback in F1.
The sounds of roaring V10 engines may be making a comeback in Formula 1. Celebrating improved safety as one of the greatest advancements in recent F1 history, Fernando Alonso expressed his disappointment over some of the regressions the sport has experienced since his first entry in 2001. "Our cars have become heavier, they lack the distinctive sound they once had, racing has become somewhat more predictable, we've lost refueling, and those challenging pit stops are gone," remarked the 43-year-old. "When it rains, the cars are too bulky, the tyres are oversized, and visibility is nonexistent. We should strive to keep safety in mind while returning to lighter, more appealing cars that excite the audience."
Interestingly, in mid-2024, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali suggested that due to sustainable fuels, the sport might ponder moving away from the current 'hybrid' power units by 2030. "This is my personal view, not yet communicated to the teams, although we have discussed it with the FIA. If sustainable fuels prove effective, we need to carefully consider whether to maintain hybrids or if better options are available," he stated. "All drivers desire lighter cars, and I would personally prefer a more substantial sound as well. Our research indicates that consumers across all markets and age groups are looking for improved sound along with the energy and vibrations that only certain types of engines can deliver when near the track."
F1 and FIA are currently at odds on several matters, yet it appears Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem are aligned on the prospect of V10s. Ben Sulayem mentioned that "a lot of positive discussions" have taken place recently behind the scenes. "As we anticipate the introduction of new chassis and power unit regulations in 2026, we must also guide the future technological trends of motorsport," he added. "We should explore various options, including the sound of a V10 operating on sustainable fuel. Regardless of the path we take, we must ensure that we assist the teams and manufacturers in controlling development costs."
