The press criticizes the seventh season of Drive to Survive
This week, on March 7, the seventh season of the documentary series about Formula 1, Drive to Survive, will be released on the Netflix streaming service. Journalists from some publications got early access to the series, watched it, and are now sharing their opinions about the new product.
The series caused a mixed reaction. The authors of Drive to Survive are praised for revealing new interesting details of the past season and for exaggerating less than in previous seasons for the sake of a beautiful script. There is also enough criticism, and it is almost more than positive reviews.
"Drive to Survive remains a fascinating way to relive the last Formula 1 season," says one review. – The main points are highlighted, and new details that were previously unknown are included in each story. In particular, Christian Horner, Zach Brown and Flavio Briatore are making statements that have never been made publicly before.
Netflix was particularly good at showing the confrontation between McLaren and Red Bull Racing. The feud between Brown and Horner, as well as the rivalry between Norris and Verstappen, is well thought out and, unlike in previous years, not greatly exaggerated.
However, a lot of attention to the main confrontation means that not much time is devoted to smaller teams in the seventh season. Haas and Alpine are somewhere on the sidelines, and Williams and Sauber are remembered only in the context of the history of the Carlos Sainz contract. RB is mentioned in connection with the departure of Daniel Ricciardo, and Aston Martin does not appear on the screen at all throughout the season.
At the same time, the authors missed some unique moments of the season. For example, nothing is said about Oliver Berman's debut for Ferrari in Saudi Arabia. He's only remembered when he replaces Kevin Magnussen in Brazil.
Adrian Newey's move from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin has been completely ignored. What about Franco Colapinto? If South American fans are going to watch Drive to Survive for the sake of their hero, they will be disappointed. In fact, Colapinto is not mentioned anywhere. Sergio Perez's departure is also not included in the season's narrative.
There are episodes that don't add interest to the series. The saga surrounding the Carlos Sainz contract is too long. The fifth episode is dedicated to Charles Leclair's victory in Monaco, and the race, which in reality was a boring procession, was described as exciting.
Those who enjoyed previous seasons of Drive to Survive can be advised to give new episodes a chance. However, those who are confused by the disadvantages described above, who do not like the strangely edited footage from the tracks, and who do not want to see a lot of Jerry Horner on the screen, can safely skip this season."
