Max Verstappen has raised questions about how seriously Formula 1 fans should take the recent rumors regarding the potential return of V10 engines to the grid. Numerous influential figures – including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and team principals like Toto Wolff, Christian Horner, Frederic Vasseur, and even Lewis Hamilton – have been exploring this notion lately.
However, it was Ben Sulayem’s recent remarks that intensified the speculation, as he hinted that the introduction of fully-sustainable fuel in F1 could make the loud, vibrant V10s a feasible option by 2030.
"I think it's a very appealing idea," the four-time world champion Verstappen commented to Viaplay over the weekend, "but the real question is whether it's achievable."
In fact, F1 is committed to an even more hybrid-focused 'power unit' era starting in 2026, featuring larger and more electrified engines than what currently exists.
Verstappen is skeptical about Ben Sulayem's comments, stating, "I think it's better not to make so many public statements, and it's preferable to resolve these matters behind closed doors. That would be in everyone's best interest."
The relationship between Verstappen and the FIA president has been tense for months, especially regarding the 'swearing ban' that led the 27-year-old to serve a day of community service in Rwanda last December.
In reaction, the Red Bull driver jested that he might resort to swearing in Limburgish from now on. "Yes, I can manage that," Verstappen chuckled. "I did enough of that while karting.
"These are all quite trivial issues that I really prefer to avoid, but it is what it is."
