Nico Hulkenberg: Sometimes you just need luck
Nico Hulkenberg's return to Sauber turned out to be productive – Nico finished seventh and earned six points, which is more than the team earned over the past season.
His partner Gabriel Bortoleto did not reach the finish line, crashing his car on a wet track.
Nico Hulkenberg (7th): "A positive result for the team that makes me smile. After yesterday's qualifying, we didn't expect to score points, but in the changeable weather, we avoided mistakes and made some good strategic decisions.
It was very difficult to keep the car on the wet track and assess the condition of the asphalt. Urban racing tracks in such conditions do not forgive mistakes, so you need to maintain maximum concentration at all times.
I had some problems with the intermediate tyres in the first half of the race. It all came down to just staying on the track and waiting for your opportunity. The safety car got me back into the fight for points when it started raining at the end. We made a pit stop at the right moment, before the others. Sometimes you just need luck.
In a situation where the opponents had problems, we avoided mistakes and scored six points. I am grateful to the whole team for the hard work that made this result possible.
" Gabriel Bortoleto (exit): "Unfortunately, the race did not end as I had hoped. It's a pity, because up to this point everything was going well. After the safety car left the track, I found myself at the very end, trying to recoup, but I ended up in the wall. I knew that anything could happen in such conditions, so I did my best, but I overdid it.
On the other hand, I'm glad that Nico and the team scored points. He did a great job, and everyone who works at the track and at the Hinville base deserves this result.
Overall, it's safe to say that my debut weekend went well, especially if you take into account my result in qualifying. I intend to keep working and improving, and now we are preparing for the stage in China next week."
