Russell was not fined
After reviewing the situation with the failure of the transponder on George Russell's car during the race and his use of the DRS system where it was not allowed, the stewards did not apply sanctions.
The stewards listened to the driver, a team representative and an employee of the FIA IT department, studied the positioning system data, telemetry and radio communications of the team.
Communication between the DRS automatic activation system and the machine was not working due to problems with the transponder supplied by a third party. In this regard, the FIA allowed the team to manually activate the DRS in accordance with Article 22.1 h of the regulations.
At the same time, the racer's car had problems with the brake-by-wire and other electronic systems. At that moment, he was advised to use an auxiliary button in the cockpit, which serves as a backup button for radio exchange and manual DRS activation.
On the straight between Turns 10 and 11, the rider tried to radio the team using this button, but instead accidentally activated DRS.
DRS was activated 37 meters into the 700-meter straight, he won by 0.02 seconds on that, but lost 0.28 seconds in the next corner to make up for that advantage. This was confirmed by telemetry.
Technically, there was a violation, but since there was no sporting advantage, the stewards decided not to impose a fine.
