Russell: Formula 1 has the strongest team in history.
After finishing second in Bahrain, George Russell talked about a lot of technical problems during the race.…
Question: George, great job. The end of the race turned out to be particularly interesting. How difficult was it to contain Lando Norris?George Russell: It was very difficult towards the end. I had a lot of problems with the car. The display on the steering wheel turned off, data was lost, the brake pedal went into emergency mode, and I had to reboot the system. One moment the brakes were working fine, and the next they weren't. To be honest, I was very happy to see the checkered flag.
Question: What's the DRS thing? Can you tell us about it?George Russell: I don't know how it happened. Obviously, this had something to do with the rest of the rejections. As soon as I saw that the DRS had suddenly opened, I slowed down, losing two tenths of a second. It didn't happen again.
I didn't actually press the DRS button – I pressed another button, but the DRS triggered. As I said, I lost a lot more time than I won – I don't think I won anything at all - the DRS was open for less than a second.
Question: Taking into account all the problems, can this second place be called the most pleasant in your career?George Russell: Yes. To be honest, I didn't have many second places. There were more third parties. We didn't expect to be next to McLaren this weekend. Qualifying on the front row was a pleasant surprise. When Lando appeared behind me on the first lap, I thought he was going to hit the spot. Oscar did an amazing job controlling the course of the race, but I was very pleased that he restrained Lando.
Question: Will you be able to claim the title this year?George Russell: I would like to, but I don't think it's possible – McLaren's advantage is too great. We saw them at their best in Bahrain, and at their worst in China and Suzuka, but they also won one of these two races.
All we have to do is earn points by picking up the leftovers. We got the second place here, and the third in Melbourne. I don't think it will last long, but who knows.
Q: Formula 1 is becoming more and more competitive – in the first part of qualifying, everything fits in a second. The teams are allocating enough funds to pay the riders – we no longer have rental drivers. Now you only need talent to get into Formula 1?George Russell: I think Formula 1 has the strongest team in history right now. All the riders perform deservedly. The sport is in great shape, so you don't need the external resource that some racers brought with them in the past. And I believe that now the task of the sport and the FIA is to support the drivers at the grassroots level, because even karting and Formula 4 are extremely expensive!
We need to make sure that talents are revealed at a very young age, and not only those who have the means for the period from seven to 17 years get the chance.
