This year marks the 20th anniversary of Alonso's first title.
Fernando Alonso is already in his 22nd season in Formula 1, and although the Aston Martin car is not very fast this year, this is certainly frustrating for the Spanish motorsport veteran, but it does not affect his fighting spirit and enthusiasm.
After the first five stages, the two-time champion has no points at all, but there is no doubt that sooner or later he will be able to reach the top ten. At the same time, he pins all his hopes on the next season, when Formula 1 will switch to new technical regulations, because the 2026 car project is led by Adrian Newey.
Alonso will turn 44 on July 29, but he is not thinking about retirement yet, although he understands that the inevitable end of his career is just around the corner. It is worth recalling that it is in 2025 that his first title, won with the Renault team, will be 20 years old.
"I will continue to compete as long as I feel that I have the speed and that the team needs me," Marca newspaper quoted Fernando as saying. – I don't see myself driving a Formula 1 car at the age of 50, but I don't know. Therefore, we are still leaving the possibility for continued cooperation.…
I can always be useful to the team: if they see fit, and I'm just as motivated, I'll extend my contract and continue racing. If I feel like I'm not fast enough anymore, or if I'm offered another position, I'll be the first to raise my hand.… Now I'm enjoying the process of preparing the team for the future. I don't know how much longer I will continue racing, but I will do everything in my power to achieve the best possible results as soon as possible."
Another Spanish newspaper, Diario AS, quoted Alonso as saying: "I keep racing because I feel like I'm doing it at the best level. So why should I stop? Yes, we are not as competitive as we would like, but this cannot be explained by any one reason.
There are several factors that influence this, so our car is not easy to drive, we are not as fast as the other teams in the middle of the peloton, who were able to add and pull up to the leaders. We haven't been able to take this step forward yet, but I hope that we will take it in the next races. Although it will be more difficult than we thought."
