Miami Grand Prix: Norris wins rain Sprint

Dull. A drying highway. Air +23...27C, highway +31...30C

It is difficult to overtake in Miami, and if there are contributing factors at the race distance – strategy, tire wear differences, temporary loss of attention – then the sprint is relatively linear - 19 laps, and you can prepare for the next session. But this time there were factors – an hour and a half before the sprint, it started to rain, flooding the track with water. And Formula 1 has not raced in the rain on the track around the Hard Rock stadium yet.

Oscar Piastri showed the best time in the only practice session on Friday, and Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli unexpectedly won the short sprint qualification. Piastri started with him from the front row, Norris and Verstappen started the race from the second row. Poleman's experienced teammate Russell started only fifth.

Leclair was supposed to start sixth, but on the exit lap from the pits, he crashed the car on a wet track, crashing into a barrier and breaking the suspension. The Ferrari had to be evacuated, Charles did not participate in the sprint. Then Berman blocked the tires, but the safety zone helped him avoid the consequences.

Yuki Tsunoda started the race from the pit lane - when servicing his car after qualifying for the sprint, the Red Bull violated the conditions of the closed fleet. Sainz started on rain tires, the rest on intermediate tires.

Ten minutes before the start, the rain stopped, but with high humidity, the asphalt dried very slowly.

There was a lot of water on the highway, visibility left much to be desired. The start was announced for the safety car, but even at a limited speed, Verstappen took off at turn 11, and Antonelli and Piastri complained that they could not see anything. The race was stopped with red flags until conditions improved.

The drivers turned into the pit lane, but it didn't take long to wait. The new start was scheduled for 12:28 p.m. local time, 28 minutes after the official start of the session.

There is noticeably less water on the highway. The race management decided to start from the spot. This time, everyone installed intermediate tires.

At the restart, Piastri was ahead of Antonelli, pushing him off the track. Kimi dropped back to fourth place and complained about Piastri, but the stewards considered the incident racing. Oscar led the race. Lawson regained five positions, Hulkenberg lost four.

      Top ten on lap 2: Piastri - Norris - Verstappen - Antonelli - Russell - Hamilton - Albon - Alonso - Lawson - Hajjar.

Sainz attacked Ocon in turn 17 and took the lead, but Esteban regained position at the exit.

Lawson complained to the engineer about the broken visor, Verstappen also had problems with visibility.

After ten laps, the intermediate rubber was worn down to slicks. The race management allowed the use of DRS.

Sainz beat Okon in the fight for 12th place.

On lap 11, Tsunoda switched to slicks. Hamilton, Stroll and Sainz replaced the tires on the 12th, Verstappen, Antonelli, Albon, Lawson and many others on the 13th.

Driving out after a tire change, Verstappen crashed into Antonelli, receiving a 10-second penalty from the stewards. After the session, the stewards gave Berman a 5-second penalty for driving unsafe into the pit lane, where Hulkenberg had to dodge to avoid an accident.

Sainz suffered a puncture in his rear left wheel after making contact with the barrier at turn 14, and he turned into the pits, where he retired from the race.

Norris, Hajjar and Okon remained on the intermediate tires. Lando complained about the debris scattered along the highway.

Hamilton overtook one driver after another and climbed to third place when the safety car pulled out – Lawson caused an accident in which Alonso crashed the car – and later received a five-second penalty and a penalty point. There were three laps left before the finish.

      Top ten on lap 15: Norris - Piastri - Hamilton - Verstappen - Albon - Russell - Stroll - Lawson - Berman - Tsunoda.

Alonso's car was evacuated on the track, and the safety car released the cars at the finish line.

Lando Norris won the Miami sprint, Oscar Piastri finished second, and Lewis Hamilton finished third.

The sprint turned out to be interesting. Qualifying for Sunday's race will begin in a few hours.
