Mick Schumacher might actually be a strong candidate for a return to Formula 1 with the new Cadillac team starting in 2026.

In Miami, the buzz centered on a potential deal involving the well-funded and experienced former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez, who was supported by billionaire Carlos Slim, also present in the city.

However, Perez did not attend Cadillac’s glamorous launch event at Queen Miami Beach on Saturday.

Notable was the presence of Schumacher, who attended both the Miami GP and the Cadillac event, as reported by Germany’s major Bild newspaper.

The publication claims that "secret discussions" between the 26-year-old WEC driver and Cadillac occurred over the weekend, which could mark the end of Schumacher's three-year wait for a return to F1.

"As Bild learned, he was in Miami to meet with Cadillac executives," reported correspondent Enrico Ahlig, who was also in Miami.

There are speculations that Schumacher could potentially team up with the 35-year-old Perez next year if the favored candidate, Indycar star Colton Herta, fails to obtain an F1 super license.

"To acquire one," Ahlig noted, "he must finish at least in fourth place this season. However, after four races, he is only in eighth position."

Also present in Miami was Cadillac advisor and F1 icon Mario Andretti, who shared with DAZN that the new eleventh team has a "pretty good idea" of their ideal initial lineup.

"We want to wait as long as we can to ensure we make the best possible decision," he explained. "But all the names you mentioned are under consideration."

Co-owner Tan Towriss also confirmed that discussions about drivers are progressing well.

"I believe it’s crucial that we’re not delaying decisions regarding driver selection," he stated. "There’s a lot to consider when picking a driver for Formula 1."

"We’re taking our time," Towriss continued. "The list certainly includes the names that people are discussing. Although I enjoy waking up to read that we’re in the final stages of negotiations."

When asked specifically about the growing rumors surrounding Cadillac, Schumacher’s uncle Ralf, younger brother of the legendary Michael Schumacher, commented to Sky Deutschland.

"Ultimately, he’s a driver with F1 experience and the ability to handle situations effectively," said the former F1 driver.

"Mick encountered difficulties in Formula 1, but his transition to the WEC turned out very well, which is significant.

"What Cadillac needs is a driver with whom they can build a future, someone who doesn't crash and is a team player," added Schumacher, who previously raced for Williams and Toyota.
