Leclair still believes that he acted correctly.
Charles Leclair is ready to agree with Max Verstappen that, under the current rules governing the actions of racers on the track, the fight is not entirely natural.
The rules introduced this season, in particular, state that when overtaking, the priority "right to turn" remains with the driver, who occupies the inside trajectory. At the same time, the front axle of his opponent's car, overtaking, in front of the apex and in the apex must be at the level of the rear-view mirror of the car being overtaken.
In essence, this means that the one who is on the inside trajectory is not obliged to leave the opponent a place on the track at the exit of the turn. For example, yesterday in Imola, shortly before the finish of the race, Leclair had a duel with Alex Elbon, a Williams driver, who had to leave the track because Charles defended himself resolutely and harshly.
Max Verstappen said in a recent interview that he doesn't like the current rules, and the Ferrari driver agrees with him: "That's the way it is. We all remember the rules and always try to stick to them, which is what I tried to do. But sometimes one centimeter decides whether you are following the rules or breaking them, and it can be difficult to assess the situation at a speed of 250 km/h.
I thought everything was within the rules, but that episode didn't look very good because one of the cars had to pull over onto the gravel shoulder. I'll analyze my actions again later – I always try to be as honest as possible. If I think I've made a mistake, I'll tell Alex about it, but for now I stand by my opinion that I acted correctly."
The episode involving Leclair and Elbon attracted the attention of the stewards, but even before they made their decision and left the incident without consequences, the Ferrari team asked their driver to return the position to the rival.
In the end, Charles finished sixth, which he was very unhappy with, but admitted: "I don't think we'll ever see a situation where everyone is happy. It is very difficult to make everything work for everyone, and it seems to me that we will never find a middle ground. When you get fined for something, you have to admit it.
And there will never be rules that provide for absolutely any situation. But even if such a set of rules does appear, we still won't be able to memorize all the provisions of the rules that will apply to all kinds of situations."
