Berra: In theory, you can use C4 in qualifying
Pirelli tire specialists summed up the results of the first day of work on the Monaco track, where, as at the previous stage in Imola, the tires of the three softest compounds, including C6, are used.
Most of the teams used it – in total, they drove 574 laps on the C6 during two hours of training, but the tires of the other two trains were also involved. Medium had 427 laps, while Hard had 221 laps.
Simone Berra, Pirelli's chief Engineer: "It's been a pretty busy day, during which we've collected a lot of data. It was important to see how the C6 tires would work here after the Imola debut, and the signs we saw last week were repeated here.
The softest tires in the 2025 lineup turned out to be slightly faster than the C5, and after one or two laps at a moderate pace, their efficiency is almost completely restored. Given the characteristic features of the softest rubber, it was also clear that the riders were not quite confident driving on such tires when they tried to show a good time on the first fastest lap.
In theory, this makes it possible to use Medium tires in one or two qualifying sessions. Moreover, as there is a special rule in effect this weekend, the choice of tyres for the qualifying final will also have an impact on the race.
For example, 13 riders from seven teams have already used a set of hard rubber today, which means they have only one such set left for Sunday. Five drivers (Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Isaac Hajjar and Liam Lawson) used one Medium kit in each of the two sessions.
As often happens in Monaco, the lap results gradually got better, partly due to the fact that the track was gradually covered with a layer of used rubber (the asphalt surface in the area from the 12th to the 3rd turns has been updated), but mainly due to the fact that the riders piloted more confidently.
Nevertheless, the speeds were still slightly lower than at last year's Friday practice sessions, and Charles Leclair showed the best time then.
In terms of tire wear, we saw some signs of granulation on the Medium at the end of long series of laps, but this is an absolutely predictable phenomenon on such a track in these conditions."
