Formula 2: Alex Dunn wins pole in Monaco

Formula 2: Alex Dunn wins pole in Monaco

Qualifying for Formula 2 in Monaco takes place in two stages, this is done in order to avoid too serious traffic problems on a narrow and winding track. There will still be difficulties, but when the racers do not go out for their fastest laps all at once, but as part of two groups of 11 cars each, the risk of incidents is still less.

Their composition is defined simply: one group includes cars with even numbers, respectively, the other with odd numbers. The order in which the groups begin qualifying is decided by drawing lots.

The pole position will go to the driver who shows the absolute best time among the participants of both groups. The rider with the best time in the slower group starts from the second position. All other positions are distributed as follows: the third will be occupied by the one who showed the second time in the group where the pole holder performed, the driver who showed the second time in the second group will start from the fourth, etc.

This time, the riders with even numbers were the first to enter the track.: These are Roman Stanek, Arvid Lindblad, Richard Fershor, Dino Beganovich, Gabriele Mini, Kush Maini, Victor Martin, Amaury Cordil, Joshua Durksen, Sami Megetunif and John Bennett.

It was not surprising that the experienced Victor Martin was the first to show a good time, beating his nearest rival by more than a second, completing a lap in 1:21.792. However, when the French ART racer tried to improve his result, it all ended with a braking error at the exit of the tunnel, and Victor cut off the chicane.

His time was blocked first by Lindblad, and then by Fershor, setting a new benchmark: 1:21.520. But Victor pulled himself together, made another attempt, and it was successful: he improved the result of the Dutchman by 0.375 seconds.

At the end of the Group A races, Dino Beganovic made a mistake in the first corner, clearly overreacted, smoked the rubber, and drove into the departure zone, but without any special consequences.

At that time, Lindblad was on his next lap, and he was driving over Martin's schedule, but he also made a mistake on the way out of the tunnel, ruining a lap that had started very well.

The 16 minutes allotted for the Group A races had expired, and Victor Martin remained on the first line, Richard Fershor showed the second result, Lindblad the third, and Mini completed his lap with the fourth time. Now everything will depend on the results of Group B, which includes Leonardo Fornaroli, Pepe Marti, Oliver Goethe, Luke Browning, Sebastian Montoya, Jack Crawford, Ritomu Miata, Alex Dunn, Keane Shields, Max Esterson and Rafael Villagomes.

It was Villagomes' accident at the last corner of the lap that caused the first yellow and then red flags to appear at the very beginning of the second 16-minute session. It was clearly visible on the video replay that Alex Dunn had clearly pushed him into the barriers!

Of course, the opinions of the participants in the incident, which they shared in very harsh terms with their teams on the radio, were diametrically opposed. After the session, they will still have the opportunity to share their points of view with the stewards, to whom both were called.

Experienced marshals in Monaco worked quickly, quickly removed Villagomes' damaged car from the track, and the races resumed. Fornaroli was the first to show a more or less representative time, but Montoya drove a lap a little faster and rose to the first place with a result of 1:23.680.

But it was Dunn who blocked Montoya Jr.'s time: his car was not damaged in that incident, and he completed his fastest lap in 1:21.437.

Some participants in the session made mistakes, trying to show a good time on the treacherous urban track in Monaco, but everything ended up locking the brakes, flying into safety zones or cutting the chicane.

But Dunn, having made a mistake at the beginning of the session, acted very clearly after that, especially since the condition of the surface became somewhat better at the end of qualifying. And his efforts were crowned with success: the McLaren youth team driver, driving for Rodin Motorsport, showed the best qualifying time in his decisive attempt.: 1:21,142!

Dunn, who leads in the individual standings, earned three bonus points for pole position, and even in Monaco, where a successful performance in qualifying, as you know, is already half the battle. By the way, this is the first pole position of a 19-year-old Irishman in Formula 2. In general, Zach Brown and Andrea Stella will be happy with their protégé.

With this qualifying format, the driver who has the 5th time in the slower group starts from pole position in the Saturday sprint, and this is the Jackpot.
