Racing Bulls does not expect any special changes due to the wing
Following the results of the first training session in Barcelona, both Racing Bulls drivers were in the top ten, with Liam Lawson showing 6th place, and his team-mate, Isaac Hajjar, 8th. However, according to Laurent Mekis, head of Racing Bulls, in this session, the attention of most teams was focused not on achieving impressive speeds, but on other tasks.
"During this session, everyone was trying to assess the impact of the famous changes related to the front wing," he said on Sky Sports. "This was the main task for us, so a sensor system was installed on one of the cars, but otherwise we followed a fairly standard program.
Last year, it was the race on this track that was the most difficult for us, so we don't overestimate our capabilities. If we talk about the flexibility of the front wing, we have limited ourselves to only minor design changes, so we do not expect them to have any noticeable effect on the efficiency of the car.
In general, in our case, the picture is still quite neutral, but we will need to analyze everything in more detail. At the same time, we do not forget that we had very serious difficulties in Barcelona a year ago."
Nico Rosberg, the 2016 world champion, acts as one of the experts of the Sky Sports team in Barcelona, and from his point of view, Isaac Hajjar, the Racing Bulls debutant, can be considered one of the stars of the season.
When Nico asked Mekis if he expected such impressive results from the young French driver, he honestly replied: "No, we didn't expect that. That's why we were surprised by such a bright start to the season, but we generally believe in the ability of good riders to progress from stage to stage, and the task is to help them effectively.
Both of our drivers are real hard workers and try to assimilate as much information as possible, but at the same time both remain realistic, they are modest, and they also have approximately the same preferences in terms of car settings. For example, Isaac's natural speed is combined with a very calm approach to work and a desire to learn, which explains such results at the beginning of the season."
