Another Aston Martin executive stands up for Lance Stroll.

"During the debriefings, we perceive a completely different person."

A high-profile figure at Aston Martin has come to Lance Stroll's defense amid a challenging phase in the Canadian's Formula 1 career. The fact that his father, billionaire Lawrence Stroll, is the owner of the Silverstone-based team has overshadowed the 26-year-old throughout his eight seasons on the grid. Compounding the situation is the fact that Stroll’s teammate since 2023 has been Fernando Alonso, who, despite being significantly older, is considered one of F1’s all-time legends.

Aston Martin simulator driver Dani Juncadella acknowledges that this poses a unique challenge for Stroll. "It's already mentally tough to compete at the level of people like Fernando and (Max) Verstappen, who are fierce competitors," he shared with DAZN. "When you come from a different background, a bubble where your father is who he is, and you have everything you need in life, it might make it harder to push through the tough times. It can be challenging to find that extra edge that Fernando has mastered," Juncadella noted.

Some believe that three years alongside Alonso, 43, has not only intensified Stroll’s on-track difficulties but has also exacerbated his seemingly disinterested demeanor off the track. Aston Martin’s chief trackside officer, Mike Krack, asserts that Stroll presents a different side behind closed doors. "In our debriefings or daily interactions, we encounter someone entirely different," he stated. "His public image does not align with what we see internally at all."

Juncadella concedes that the current season might be affecting Stroll. "Ultimately, you can become overly fixated on the thought of being unable to outperform the other driver, which can backfire. Perhaps this has been the case with Stroll and Alonso," he remarked. "Last year, we witnessed moments where Stroll excelled, even on weekends when Fernando struggled, but now it seems that Fernando consistently outperforms him."

With big names such as George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and even Max Verstappen being mentioned in connection with Aston Martin for 2026, 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg reflected on the difficult position for Stroll's father. "He must decide whether to bring in another driver and potentially let go of his own son. It’s an awful situation for him," Rosberg commented.

Adrian Newey, widely regarded as the greatest F1 designer of all time and now at Aston Martin, has also defended Stroll, asserting that he is underrated. Meanwhile, trackside boss Krack continues to support Stroll’s work ethic. "On Mondays, while many drivers are likely enjoying a beach vacation, Lance is at work, either driving the simulator or making preparations for next year’s car."
