Oscar Piastre: I overdid it a little a few times.
Oscar Piastri is pleased with the weekend’s results in Austria, but not with losing to his teammate...
Question: Oscar, how intense was the fight with Lando during the race?Oscar Piastri: We’ve fought before, not only last week but also last year and the year before that, so we both knew what to expect. The battle was intense, sometimes even too much. Maybe I overstepped a couple of times, but still, it’s a fight for victory in a Formula 1 race. I think the race was interesting. After the first pit stop, we probably made a mistake by allowing Lando a bit of a break, but the first 20 laps were quite intense. So, it was a good fight.
Question: Why did you pit four laps later than Lando?Oscar Piastri: I knew I would be second to pit. I thought that if I couldn’t stay within the DRS zone, reducing the gap to a second afterward would be very, very difficult. So, I wanted to do something a bit different—put on fresher tires and use them at the end of the stint. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. We will analyze everything and decide whether we made the right decision. I would have lost some time anyway by pitting a lap later, so I decided to try something else.
Question: How important was it to overtake Charles at the start?Oscar Piastri: Very important. It allowed me to start from a second behind Lando, and here DRS gives a big advantage. It soon became clear that our fight for the victory would be just between us. That was the key moment.
Question: Will you also compete for victory with your teammate at Silverstone?Oscar Piastri: I hope so, but you never know. Before Canada, we thought we would be the fastest, but it turned out not to be the case. I’m confident we’ll be in good shape, but whether we are the best or not, we’ll find out next week.
Question: The team called your move at turn four "too risky." But [team principal] Andrea Stella said you apologized as soon as you crossed the finish line...Oscar Piastri: Blocking the wheels and almost crashing into the back of my teammate’s car—that’s a risky move. Even if the team hadn’t said anything, I wouldn’t do it again.
Question: Silverstone is Lando’s home race. Oscar, are you prepared for an unfriendly reception from British fans?Oscar Piastri: I don’t think so. It seems that this year, the fans have been generally a bit kinder to us. In Austria, we weren’t booed by Max Verstappen’s fans, and they’ve always treated me very well. I race for a British team; the fans love McLaren and everything connected to the team, including us and Lando. I understand there will be many more Lando fans than mine, but that’s fair. It’s his home race, but I think everything will be fine.
