Nico Hülkenberg: I don't quite understand how this happened.
Nico Hülkenberg finished third at Silverstone and stood on the podium for the first time in his career. The German driver needed 239 Grand Prix to achieve this. For Sauber, the podium was their first since the Japanese Grand Prix of 2012.
Gabriele Bortolotti failed to finish, crashing his car on the third lap. Thanks to Hülkenberg's result, Sauber moved up to sixth place in the Constructors' Championship.
Nico Hülkenberg (3rd): "Feeling great. It’s been a long journey, agree? But I always knew I’d make it.
What a race! I started basically at the back, and it all feels pretty surreal. I don’t quite understand how it happened, but obviously, the crazy weather conditions played their part. Most of the race became a battle for survival. We simply made the right decisions, chose the right tires at the right moments, and made no mistakes — just incredible.
I denied the possibility of a podium until the last pit stop, but then, when I was told I had a bit of a gap to Lewis, I thought, “Okay, there’s some time to catch my breath.”
Then Lewis started closing in quickly, so there was pressure. The race was tense, but we didn’t crack under the pressure, made no errors, and I’m very, very happy about that.
I think Lewis gave his all for his fans, but I thought: “Sorry guys, but today’s my day.” I’m ready to accept criticism for that. I’m very happy!"
Gabriele Bortolotti (retirement): "It’s simple — I made a mistake. I immediately went for the soft tires because I thought the track would dry quickly. The sun was shining, and I didn’t expect rain to start again. That’s why I decided to switch to the Medium tires, planning to gain a few positions.
After the start, the tires’ grip with the track was very low. When exiting the first corner, the car started to slide, I tried to correct it but couldn’t. I hit the wall with the rear wing, which got damaged. We decided to stop to prevent debris from scattering on the track. That’s where my race ended.
But for me and the team, today is still a special day. I consider Nico one of the most talented drivers I’ve ever met, and he is undoubtedly my best teammate in many ways — both as a person and as a driver. He works hard and earned this result."
