Allison acknowledges that Mercedes struggles with tyre management in 2025.

James Allison has identified tyre management as the primary flaw behind Mercedes' inconsistent performance in 2025, noting that this is an area where the dominant McLaren has a distinct advantage.

"We’re experiencing a cycle of winning on our own strengths and having poor performances like we did in Austria and England," the technical director of Mercedes stated to Auto Motor und Sport. "It's obvious that this championship relies on who can manage tyre temperatures most effectively.

      "And that's certainly not us."

Allison mentioned that modern ground-effect cars and reduced tyre preheating have made this challenge even more difficult to address.

"There are two factors at play that complicate matters today compared to the past," he clarified. "One factor is the limited preheating of tyres, which, combined with ground-effect cars that exert significantly greater demands on tyres in high-speed corners, results in increased thermal stress compared to before."

He also pointed out that restricted testing and insufficient tyre data leave teams in the dark regarding critical parameters.

"The regulations hinder our ability to better understand tyres. Testing is largely not permissible," Allison remarked. "The only way to gain a better understanding of tyre behavior is through Grand Prix weekends, but there are many other tasks to focus on."

Ferrari's team principal, Frederic Vasseur, concurs that tyres are central to the 2025 season.

"Tyre management is not only crucial for the 2025 season, but it’s also a longstanding issue of 25 years," Vasseur stated. "Whoever can bring the tyres into their optimal working range quickly and maintain that status will have an even more significant influence, especially with the tight competition we have today."

"And that’s exactly where McLaren holds a significant advantage."
